5 REASONS MILLENNIALS ARE ELOPING (AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD TOO?
July 18, 2018
There is nothing we love better than a wedding, but at Date Night Ideas we’re pretty much gaga over any sort of union. As such, the newly emerging trend that sees Millennials opting to elope instead of spending their cash on a wedding has us just as excited as a big white celebration.
Here are a few reasons why the younger crowd says they choose to elope rather than wed (and maybe you should too?):
IT’S SO MUCH CHEAPER
When couples in South Africa are spending upwards of R100 000 to celebrate their union these days, you can understand why the young guns are choosing to elope instead. After all, you’re just starting your life together, and if you want to put your money to better use (to say, make your house a little nicer, or buy one to start with), that makes a whole lot of sense.
WE HAVE TOO MANY FRIENDS!
Lots of couples are choosing to make their union official a little later in life, which necessarily means a wedding guest list can become quite a headache. If you’re getting married in your thirties you are dealing with your family, school friends, college mates and all the other lovely humans you’ve met in our twenties. Choosing to elope can streamline your guestlist considerably, since most people understand that these events are for the nearest and dearest only.
YOU CAN THROW IN SOME TRAVEL
When you’re boiling down your guestlist to, say, 10 or 15 people, you can spend some money on taking it off-site. I.e. if you’ve always wanted to travel to Rome, or Tahiti, or even the Cradle of Mankind, you can weave this into your elopement. If that’s not a great incentive, we don’t know what is.
YOU CAN SPLURGE ON ONE THING
Many couples want to spend quite a bit of cash on one thing to make their day special. Whether that is an expensive dress from your favourite designer, a wonderful photographer to capture your special day or a celebrity chef to make some epic food, the money you save on an elopement makes that possible.
IT’S YOUR DAY
Who said you have to have a wedding anyway? If you don’t like to be the centre of too much attention, or you prefer to enjoy special moments in a smaller group to really engage with every guest, an elopement could very well be the perfect option for you and your partner.
Keep your eye on the blog in coming weeks and months as we share more trends and tips on getting hitched and celebrating your love for each other.

More colloquially, elopement is often used to refer to a marriage conducted in sudden and secretive fashion, usually involving a hurried flight away from one's place of residence together with one's beloved with the intention of getting married.
Untold numbers of couples have thrown their hands up in the midst of wedding planning and uttered these 4 words: “Eff it: Let’s elope!”
If the pomp and circumstance of “traditional” wedding planning makes you want to pull your hair out, an intimate elopement is probably right up your alley. Elopements can be incredibly personal and oh so romantic... not to mention they can save you tons of time, money and your sanity. But trust us, Sun City or your garden is NOT your only option! We’ve put together a list of elopement destinations to help you craft an unforgettable wedding for two or even twenty!
REASONS WHY IT IS OK TO ELOPE
Weddings can be VERY expensive.
Since you don't have to pay for a wedding, maybe now you can have a destination wedding.
You'll get to save about a year's worth of sanity.
You won't have to worry about choosing bridesmaids or a guest list at all.
But you can still have family at your elopement.
Even though it's totally chill if you don't want to invite ANYONE.
You get to wear whatever you want.
And you don't need to have a traditional wedding to rock classic bridal gear.
No one will turn into a monster.
Don't think you're gonna miss out on having photos.
It'll be very hard for something to go wrong.
You can do whatever you want with your vows.
Plus, you can still totally have a big reception later on.
You actually get to spend the day together.
And isn't that all that you want? Your best friend by your side?
