Do you love spending time in the kitchen with your partner cooking up a storm? Cooking together is one of our favourite date ideas, and you know what makes it even more fun? The ability to turn to a flourishing micro-garden to pick ingredients straight off the plant without even having to leave your yard! You only need a space the size of a small-ish dining table to grow enough fresh produce to keep your kitchen stocked, so if you live in a flat with a sizeable veranda, you can turn a part of it into a growing area even if you don’t have a garden as such.

Here are a few top tips to get you started on growing a kitchen garden with your partner:

PREPARATION IS KEY
The first thing you need to know about gardening is that it is very much trial and error. Chances are you’re going to have a few mishaps and less-than-amazing crops along the way. The more time you spend tending your garden, the better you’ll get at it. To ensure that you enjoy the best results possible the first time around, take some time to prep your garden area. Speak to the attendants at your local nursery to get some advice on prepping the soil in your region (every area differs slightly) and be sure to load it up with lots of compost before you even plant those first seedlings.

START WITH HERBS
If you’re planning a kitchen garden, we recommend that you start with herbs. It’s a good place to start, because once plants like coriander and spring onion are established, they become the gift that keeps on giving – you can cut and use as much as your heart desires, provided you fertilise and water it properly. Another useful tip is to group complementary plants together. E.g. basil and tomatoes, chives and carrots, dill and cabbages. These plants live symbiotically in terms of the nutrients they consume from the soil, the type of insect life they attract and repel, etc. Plus, they tend to go together in food as well!

ROTATE THOSE BEAUTIES
Remember to rotate your crops from one year to the next. Certain plants require more of one given nutrient, while others need more of another. By rotating your crops, you give your soil chance to replenish the stores the previous crop had depleted.
