BEAUTIFUL TREES TO PLANT AS ANNIVERSARY GIFTS
November 24, 2018
Finding a nice, meaningful anniversary or birthday gift for your partner can sometimes be a bit of a chore, especially if you’ve been together for a while and you’ve exhausted your stable of go-to presents that show how much you appreciate having them in your life.
Luckily, we’ve got you sorted! This year, instead of spending money on something they may or may not like, give them something special that will grow with your relationship – plant them a tree! It’s not only a beautiful gesture, you’ll also lending the environment a helping hand.
Here are our top ideas for giving trees as anniversary gifts:
PERENNIAL TREES THAT GROW WITH YOUR GARDEN
If you’re lucky enough to have a home with a garden, planting a nice perennial tree that will grow to be a focal point and provide a shady spot for future backyard picnics is a wonderful idea. Make sure to choose a water-wise indigenous tree like a Lavender Tree (Heteropyxis natalensis), Wild Peach (Kiggelaria africana) or White Pear (Apodytes dimidiata), that is suited to the South African climate and will thrive with a moderate amount of care.
BONSAIS THAT SUIT AN APARTMENT OR LOFT
A bonsai tree is a good option if you live in an apartment, loft or rental home, or might move in future. This way you can take your tree with you when you head for greener pastures. There are a great variety of bonsai trees to choose from, including proudly South African options like Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) – a plant that has one of the highest carbon-neutralising ratios in the world!
CELTIC ZODIAC TREES
Did you know that the ancient Celts had a tree-based zodiac? That’s right – instead of assigning animals or mythical creatures as the symbols for each zodiac segment, they assigned trees! You can find out what your partner’s tree is here and plant it for their birthday.
When you plant a tree, dig a hole of 0,5m deep and 0,5m in diameter - for large trees, the hole's diameter should at least be 20cm wider than the soil around the roots. The hole should be square to avoid roots growing in a circle instead of branching into the ground.
Arrange a layer of stones, followed by a layer of river sand at the bottom of the hole. Place a plastic pipe sticking out 20cm above the ground surface in order to feed the roots for a healthy root system. Then fill the hole with a mixture of 1/3 compost and 2/3’s soil, mixed with Protek Garden Phosphate 8.3 fertiliser. Place the plant in the middle of the hole and fill with the soil mix. Don’t cover the stem as it can fungal infections.
Drench the soil with water from above and also pour water into the pipe to ensure the soil is well watered in around the roots.
These ideas should allow you to surprise your partner with a great gift for your next anniversary or upcoming birthday.
Here’s to keeping it green!
