Aphrodisiac recipes have been cooked up to inspire romance in the boudoir throughout the world for millennia. In Europe, many 18th century recipes were based on the theories of the Roman physician Galen, who wrote that foods worked as aphrodisiacs if they were "warm and moist". Luckily, we know better these days - there are plenty of tasty foods that can light a spark without the need to slave over a hot stove. Here are our top picks!

AVOCADOS
Mash it up with a hint of chilli and olive oil to enjoy with some home-made nachos, slice it into fresh summer salads, or simply slather it on warm toast - avocados' high levels of vitamin E help to keep the spark alive because of its role in maintaining youthful vigour and robust energy levels.

HONEY
There’s a good reason why that post-wedding getaway is called a ‘honeymoon’ – honey contains boron, which helps the body to regulate oestrogen and testosterone levels and provides a natural energy boost. Pour some in your tea, have it with Greek yogurt and toasted almonds for breakfast or drizzle it over fresh fruit for a lovely warm-weather dessert.

CHILLI PEPPERS
Not everyone likes it spicy, but chilli peppers have been a recognised aphrodisiac in so many cultures for so long that you can’t go wrong with a bit of the burn. According to nutritionists, chili peppers stimulate endorphins (the brain's feel good chemicals), speed up your heart rate and make you sweat, which all mimics the body's arousal responses. So, it's basically a shortcut to creating a little excitement. Cook up a big batch of chilli con carne, add it to marinades or create your own home-made chilli sauce to heat things up!

BANANAS
Aside from being a superfood, bananas also contain an enzyme called bromelain, which triggers healthy testosterone production, as well as high levels of potassium and vitamin B that elevate energy levels. Add it to smoothies, fruit salads or slather it with peanut-butter for a treat that is sure to rev those engines.

WATERMELON
No kidding! Watermelon is chockful of lycopene, a super healthy red carotenoid pigment that is known to relax blood vessels and improve circulation... to all parts of the body. Eat it by itself as a poolside treat, add it to summery salads or make some refreshing watermelon-and-mint popsicles.

RED WINE
Yup, there’s yet another reason to indulge in your favourite tipple! Aside from having a relaxing effect, red wine contains resveratrol, an antioxidant that helps boost blood flow and improves circulation before and during intercourse. So, drink up! We recommend Van Loveren Shiraz and Merlot – great vintages that go well with everything from a Sunday roast to a tapas picnic in the backyard.

These six aphrodisiacs are sure to give you loads of energy and zest for life that will reignite the spark in the bedroom. Work it into your diet and enjoy all the benefits of renewed intimacy with your partner in the lead-up to Valentine’s Day.
