FUN SUMMERTIME DATE IDEAS ON THE WEST COAST
October 06, 2017
The West Coast is one of those parts of South Africa that grows on you. There’s an honesty and sincerity to its stark beauty that you can only truly understand once you’ve experienced it for yourself. Be warned though, you will lose your heart to this place and will want to return as often as possible! Here are our favourite summertime date ideas along the West Coast: COOK FROM THE SEA
The West Coast is one of South Africa’s most exciting, emerging foodie destinations. Sure, it’s known for snoek and roosterkoek, but there are a great many other things cooking as well… You could, for instance, book a private cuisine encounter at Isabella Niehaus’ kitchen on the dune in Langebaan, where she will teach you how to make delicious seafood dishes straight from the sea.
TOP TIP: If you don’t feel like getting your hands dirty, but still want to enjoy an awe-inspiring meal, make your way to Wolfgat, where diners enjoy a seasonal menu consisting exclusively of ingredients foraged from the ocean and surrounding veld. Booking is essential – the restaurant only seats 20 people per meal.GO WINE TASTING
We bet you didn’t know that the West Coast is a wine region in its own right, but it is, and a rather remarkable one at that. We recommend that you head towards Darling to sample a few choice vintages from cellars like Groote Post, Darling Cellars, Ormonde Vineyards and Cloof Wine Estate.
TOP TIP: Groote Post has a market every last weekend of the month, so see if you can get your visit to coincide. Bonus points if you can make it during the flower season!ENJOY SOME STELLAR SURFING
The West Coast waters are not for the faint of heart. It’s brisk to say the least! But if you enjoy surfing (and are already pretty good at it), this is a wonderful place to prove your mettle. Elandsbaai boasts the most challenging left-hand break in all of Southern Africa, it shoots well, it has camping, it has a hotel with a bar, and it has years and years of assorted ruffian surf lore surrounding it. In short – if you and your partner enjoy some serious surfing, this is the place to be!
These are just a few of the many wonderful things you can get up to along the West Coast. There is so much more to see, do, taste and explore! Keep an eye on the blog in coming weeks and months as we share more of our favourite date ideas around the country.
