ASTONISHING STARGAZING DESTINATIONS

We are truly blessed throughout large parts of South Africa to enjoy gorgeous, unimpeded views of the celestial bodies that dot the African night sky. This is thanks to the fact that vast stretches of our country don’t suffer from the light-pollution that plagues metropolitan areas and obscures views of the stars.

Here are our top picks among the many astonishing stargazing destinations in South Africa to inspire your next romantic getaway:

THE CEDERBERG
The scenic Cederberg mountains offer some of the best stargazing throughout the country. It’s only two hours from Cape Town and yet the landscape is completely different: wilder, warmer with a raw, dramatic beauty.

Where to stay: Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve without a doubt! Situated far away from the city lights, in a vast open space where rock formations frame the horizon and guest can book a bona fide stargazing tour, this stunning nature reserve offers accommodation in open air rooms, cave and hut suites, as well as camping spots.

THE KAROO
If you have stars in your eyes, the Karoo is a must-visit destination. More specifically, Sutherland is the place to be. This is after all where the world’s most foremost astronomers decided to erect the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) - the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere – so it makes sense that the stargazing out there is pretty epic.

Where to stay: Rooikloof Guest Farm is situated adjacent to the Rooikloof pass about 2.8km from Sutherland and offers self-catering accommodation in five beautifully appointed cottages on their premises. If you’d rather stay in Sutherland itself, have a look here – there are plenty of lovely self-catering and catered options.

THE BUSHVELD
The Bushveld is a sub-tropical woodland region that encompasses large parts of Limpopo - an area of beautiful and contrasting landscapes that is also tailormade for stargazing.

Where to stay: Monate Game Lodge is situated in the midst of manicured gardens on an 1839-hectare private reserve in the Limpopo Province within easy reach of the Gauteng area. For a more rustic stay we recommend Bergsig Eco Estate in Bela-Bela - a 340-hectare bushveld reserve that offers accommodation in chalets and bundu huts near a rock pool, as well as a small campsite with only 10 stands.

These wonderful stargazing destinations should be more than enough to inspire a beautifully romantic getaway for you and your partner. After all, when the stars align, who knows what could happen…
