RESTORE CALM TO YOUR BEDROOM
November 14, 2018
Our modern-day schedules are so jam-packed with work and social obligations that it can be hard to wind down and switch off when you finally make your way to the bedroom at the end of a long day. Here are five simple rituals that can help you and your partner to restore calm to your bedroom and enjoy truly restorative rest, so you may tackle the next day’s challenges with a fresh, rested mind and body.
UNPLUG AND POWER DOWN
The light emitted from your computer, phone or tablet is blue-spectrum light that tells your brain to stop excreting melatonin (the hormone that makes you sleepy). If you continue to scroll along, your brain will get the message that it has to stay awake. Invest in a standalone alarm clock and leave your phones in the other room until morning.
INDULGE IN SOME MASSAGES
Struggling to unwind? Take turns to give each other a bedtime massage with soothing lavender oil before you hit the hay. Lavender oil is known to aid restful sleep.
TURN DOWN THE LIGHTS AND THERMOSTAT
Darkness cues your brain to excrete melatonin, which makes you sleepy. Additionally, having your bedroom temperature at 18.5 °C is ideal – it is significantly cooler than your core body temperature, which results in restful slumber.
TURN YOUR BEDROOM INTO A SLEEP SANCTUARY
If you steer clear of your bedroom for any activities other than sleep and intimacy your body and brain will start to associate the space with rest, and create a mental association between the bed and sleepiness. Rather watch TV or do your last bit of work in another room before you head off to sleep. There you have it – five simple rituals what will help you to restore calm to your bedroom. Remember to be kind to yourself this festive season and take the time to get the rest you need at the end of a long year!
