3 UNUSUAL DINNER DESTINATIONS IN JOZI
July 31, 2017
At Date Night Ideas, we’re all about keeping things fresh and exciting. This is why we go out of our way to find the most interesting date destinations in South Africa. While dinner and a movie might not be a very novel date idea as such, there are ways to make this go-to evening outing a little more remarkable. For instance, you could take your partner to an intriguing new eatery.
To help you do so, we got in touch with a few of our foodie friends up in Gauteng to recommend their favourite new restaurants in Johannesburg. So, without further ado, here are our top 3 picks for unusual dinner destinations in the City of Gold:
THE LEOPARD (MELVILLE)
Where? 63 4th Avenue, Melville
When? Weekdays 17h00 to 23h00; Saturday 11h00 – 23h00
How much? R150 (average meal cost)
If you enjoy quirky decor and innovative menus, The Leopard
is the place to be. Think fragrant coconut milk sea bass curry; toasted flatbread with Baba Ghanoush, tzatziki and beetroot-ginger dip; and beef meatballs with butterbean mash, pan juice and an onion muddle. The menu is seasonal and changes according to availability. You can also rest assured that you are dining ethically - the beef is grass fed, the poultry free range and the pork and seafood has been sourced from sustainable sources. Plus, they have Zoo cookies with tea as a dessert option! Gotta love it.
BAHA TACO (NORWOOD)
Where? 39 Grant Avenue, Norwood
When? Tuesday to Saturday 12h00 – 21h00; Sunday 11h00 – 20h00
How much? R45 to R70 (average meal cost)
serves Mexican street food at its best. Owners David and Kat Smale take immense pride in their attention to detail - think wood-fired nachos and pork shoulder that is roasted for 14 hours and then lovingly paired with a delightful pineapple-habanero salsa. We highly recommend the fish taco - freshly made corn tortillas served with fresh, beer-battered hake, guacamole, chopped lettuce and a coleslaw that will have you singing mariachi all the way home. Delicious!
Where? Corner of Miriam Makeba and Gwigwi Mrwebi streets, Newtown
When? Monday to Wednesday 10h00 – 18h00; Thursday to Saturday 10h00 – 02h00; Sunday 11h00 – 16h00
How much? R100 (average meal cost)
Situated in the highly fashionable Work Shop New Town, Town is a sexy little bar
with trendy cocktails and dim sum in bamboo baskets. This is a great spot to have a drink and a snack before you hit the town to go dancing or join a couple of friends for a late dinner.
These are just three of the many wonderful restaurants in Johannesburg. Do you have a favourite Jozi eatery that was not listed here?
