Guess what? As big supporters of regular date nights, we've always known that securing pockets of couple's time in a busy two-way schedule has an incredibly beneficial impact on any relationship, but now we have scientific proof! No kidding - a report released by W. Bradford Wilcox and Jeffrey Dew from the National Marriage Project in the USA studied the impact of date nights on relationships and came back with findings that suggest it contributes substantially to the longevity thereof. In less academic language – the more you date, the healthier your relationship will be!

The report found that a date night (which was defined as any situation in which a couple deviates from their normal routine to enjoy a shared activity) offers five benefits.

THE FIVE BENEFITS OF REGULAR DATE NIGHTS

IT OPENS LINES OF COMMUNICATION
You may think that you and your partner talk all the time, but that doesn’t mean you’re truly communicating. Chatting about your Eskom bill or discussing what to eat for dinner may kill the silence, but a date night provides the space to delve a little deeper.

YOU UNCOVER DIFFERENT FACETS OF YOUR PARTNER
When you do something together you’ve never done before (e.g. salsa dancing, cooking a three-course meal, base-jumping from a building) you see your partner in a brand-new way and this strengthens your bond.

IT UNDERPINS YOUR COMMITMENT
Even just the idea that your partner is willing to make some time to spend with you (and only you) has shown to improve couple's sense of commitment to one another.

IT IS A GREAT STRESS-RELIEVER
Stress is one of the biggest reasons why romance goes out the back door. Engaging in fun activities help couples to blow off some steam and recover that initial honeymoon feeling.

IT GETS YOU OUT OF THE HOUSE
Research has found that the happiest couples are those that are connected to their community. A date night takes you out of the house and into your immediate community, even if it’s just a chat with the waiter while you wait for your meal or a quick word with someone in line at the movies.

So, there you go – five scientifically proven reasons to splurge on a date night every now and again. Keep your eye on the blog for more date night ideas, tips and advice.
