24 September 2016 is National Heritage Day (affectionately known as Braai day) and throughout the country, patriotic South Africans are getting ready to celebrate their unique culture, customs, and traditions. Don’t fret if you don’t have any plans in place just yet, the team at Date Night Ideas have your back – we’ve done a bit of research and found a few awesome events in and around Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth.

CAPE TOWN & SURROUNDS

TAKE PART IN A POTJIESKOS CHALLENGE IN NOORDHOEK
The Farm Village in Noordhoek is playing host to a fiery potjiekos competition. that will be judged by Chefs Franck Dangereux and Pete Goffe-Wood. But you don't have to take part to join in the fun - contestants present their entries at 3pm, after which guests can sample 10+ styles of potjiekos for R100p/p. Best of all? The proceeds of the competition go to the Open Door Project feeding scheme, so you'll be contributing to a good cause to boot.

ROCK OUT AT THE LIVE LOUD MUSIC CONCERT
National radio station 5FM is hosting one of Cape Town's biggest music festivals at Kenilworth Race Course on Saturday 24 September. The Live Loud concerts will span 13 hours and feature the talents of local stars like Black Coffee, Al Bairre, Goodluck, aKing, Gangs of Ballet, Dirty Skirts, Desmond & The Tutus and Matthew Mole. This outing is a tad pricey at R295 a pop, but you'll be getting a lot of bang for your hard-earned buck. Tickets are available from Computicket.

Other cool options include the Heritage Day Braai at Constantia Glen, the Franschhoek Uncorked Festival, Earthdance trance festival outside of Worcester, the Coffee & Chocolate Expo at Green Point Cricket Park and the Cape Town Fringe Festival that takes place at various venues throughout the Mother City.

SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS AT THE FINERY FAIR
The Finery Fair in Kievits Kroon is an annual event that allows the region’s most talented artisans to showcase their wares. Visitors can look forward to trendy crafts, great music, interesting workshops, delicious food and awesome fashion – a wonderful way to enjoy our nation’s diverse heritage!

GET DOWN AT CONSTITUTION HILL
Electronic music lovers can get ready for the day/night of the lives at The Takeover at Constitution Hill, where three international DJs will be pumping beats from 12:00 – 21:00.

VISIT CLEARWATER MALL FOR SOME GOOD FOOD AND SHOPPING
Clearwater Mall is home to 237 shops and is a premier shopping destination in the North West suburbs of Johannesburg on the rapidly expanding residential corridor along Hendrik Potgieter Drive at the intersection of the main East West arterial Christiaan de Wet Road. It's a destination for the whole family filled with world class shopping, excellent entertainment with a full cinema complex by Nu Metro with 3D technology and several up market restaurants, fast food outlets and coffee shops. There are two big jungle gyms for small kids to play on - one in front of McDonalds which is open to anyone and one in front of Spur which can be used by Spur customers.

ENJOY THE PHOLA PICNIC
The 100% Phola Picnic takes place at Inanda Dam. This family-friendly event is a communal feast that features live music by jazz, hip hop and electronic dance acts, as well as plenty of braai facilities and a children’s playground. Pack your picnic, get out the camping chairs and head out for the day!

DISCOVER TOWNSHIP MUSIC
The 3rd annual KwaMashu Festival 2016 is a musical and social Event celebration INK Tourism and township heritage, with artists from all over SA performing live on stage, and entertainment provided by local bikers, INK Exhibition and more.

SUPPORT THE ARTS AT THE VOLKSBLAD KUNS-EN KOSMARK
The Volksblad Kos-en-kunsmark is a monthly event that takes place at Emoya Estates and serves as  for the entrepreneurial pursuits of Bloemfontein’s residents. Swing by to enjoy some lovely food, great  and a decidedly convivial atmosphere.

GET BACK IN TOUCH WITH NATURE
The Hogsback Festival of Trees & Ecoweek is a wonderful opportunity to give back to Mother Nature. The event takes place at Terra-Khaya Backpackers in Hogsback and a comprehensive ticket will give you access to some prime camping space, trees for planting, three tasty vegetarian meals, live bands and DJs, as well as discussion groups and a market on. 

BOOGIE FOR HERITAGE IN GRAHAMSTOWN
The Grahamstown Sondela Heritage Music Festival takes place at the Green Village Field and serves to showcase local talent from the Sara Baartman District Municipalities. Pack a picnic, bring the family and settle in for the day as entertainers from all walks of life strut their stuff to prove their mettle.
